Google TV Streamer was announced last month as a replacement for the Chromecast line and it’s arriving in stores today for $100. As part of this, Google is bringing TV Streamer features like the Smart Home Panel and AI from Hisense and others to Google TV.
A key feature is the previously announced Home Panel which is now coming to Google TV as well. You can view and control all compatible smart home devices (lights, thermostats, cameras, etc.) directly on your TV with your voice or Google Assistant. New doorbell notifications also show you who’s at the front door without pausing your program.
Google also announced a few new features we haven’t seen yet. If you want to use your TV as a picture frame, Ambient Screensaver displays Google Photos and also lets you create AI-generated designs through a series of prompts. The latter is a pretty cool new feature if you don’t mind looking at lifeless art created by a machine.
Speaking of AI, Google is adding “advanced” AI overviews (above) created by Gemini for popular movies and series on streaming services like HBO. Google said “these overviews include full summaries, audience reviews, and season-by-season analysis” to help you choose shows.
Other new features include a new Sports page in the For You tab that puts games, YouTube highlights, commentary, and more in one place. Google has also added a guide to its live TV Freeplay service (previously soft-launched) so you can better keep track of its 150 or so free channels. The new features are rolling out today on Google TV Streamer and smart Google TVs from Hisense and TCL or projectors from Epson and XGIMI.
Today may seem like it’s all about the Galaxy S25, but if you use an older Android phone, there’s something new for you, too. Starting today, Google is rolling out an improved version of Circle to Search on all Android devices.
To recall, Circle to Search is an AI-powered feature that Google released early last year. You can access it by long-pressing your phone’s home button and then circling something with your finger. At its most basic, the feature is a way to use Google Search from anywhere on your phone without having to switch between apps. This is especially useful when you want to do an image search since you don’t need to take a screenshot or tell Google what you’re looking for.
As far as those enhancements I mentioned, Google is adding one-tap actions for phone numbers, email addresses, and URLs, meaning that if Circle to Search recognizes them, it will allow you to call, email, or visit a website with a single tap. Again, no need to switch between apps to interact with those elements.
In less exciting news, Google is bringing AI overviews to Circle to Search. As long as your device is set to English, the company’s AI-generated search summaries will appear when relevant. Google said it was preparing to expand the availability of AI overviews when it introduced Gemini 2.0 late last year, so the fact that they’re now integrated with Circle to Search shouldn’t be a surprise. As with any Google release, today’s update may take a few days to arrive on your device.
